The second Rhyller Thriller Horror Extravaganza was held at the Town Hall on Saturday 18th of May, in Rhyl itself.
We have never traded this far up in Wales, and as its a relatively young festival of all things horror, we didnt iknow what to expect. So Mr Cariad Confectionery and myself ventured up to Rhyl to check it out for ourselves.....
This Horror con may have only been in it second year, but it attracted horror fanatics from near and far, including London and Brussels, and we thought we'd travelled far for the event! The pull of the movie Director Neil Marshall as the guest of honour, taking part in a Q&A, along with Janine Pipe and actor Craig Conway, after screenings of his acclaimed Dog Soldiers and The Descent, was a big pull, especially for us as we were staying in the same hotel, no we didn't stalk them.....much ;)
The Cariad Crew were there to trade at fringe alternative market obviously celeb spotting and getting the living daylights scared out of me was simply a bonus, people could visit this part of th event for free, and there was a huge variety of visitors from young and old alike, the fact it was a horror con didn't put they younger ones off one bit, for those who were more brave of heart, an additional fee was payable to visit and enjoy the films on offer and the talks.
Our selection of sweet treats, drinks and snacks went down a treat especially for those who were at the con from 10 am to way past 10pm watching all the short and feature films during the event! Our other products were also very well recived, we sold out of out Tubbz mystery bags and our pins and alternative jewellry collections were also a big hit. We would like to say a big thank you to all who stopped to buy and chat with us throughout the day!
During the event several short films were shown, with the inaugural Bloody Seagull Award being presented to Amelie Leroy for her short film Wilderness. We had a sneaky preview of the award the morning of the event, which almost saw us christened by the local gulls, who are massive in comparison to their counterparts in Caernarfon btw! I'm sure the extreamly large deposit which splatted a few feet away was a nod of approval guys ;)
Out for a Film Media, a new partnership between filmmakers Thomas Ellis and Addie Davies based Llanddulas Youth and Community Centre, screened a “family-friendly” entry in the short film competition. It starred local youngsters aged 6 to 18. And we had a fab time talking to all that were involved, good luck with all the future film making!
I had the personal pleasuer of being tourmented by this fella all day!! To say that I'm not a fan of clowns is an understatement.... have you people not heard of John Wayne Gacey or even seen IT?!?!? Also in the photo is the event organisers Chad and Tomos...not so scary guys ;)
My tourmentor for the day was part of the Murder House Productions and Museum of Horros crew, and the cast members were amazing! The attention to details in their costumes right down to their mannerisms was spot on... no wonder there were shrieks and some tears from some of the visitors to the Fringe alternative market, and I'm really proud to say that non of the shrieks of terror nor tears came from me!!
The Rhyller Thriller event is organised by Rhyl business leaders Chad Jones and Tomos Rowlands, who run a cracking tattoo parlour in Rhyl called Sacrament Tattoo Collective when they're not too busy organising the next instalment of the Rhyller Thryller! Before the event, Chad spoke to the press saying It's "Our dream is to create something special for Rhyl that brings people to this town." And you can see from the night setting up to all the correspondence leading up to the event including the day itself, these guys and their families put their all into this young event!
After the event, hinting at a third Rhyller Thriller in 2025, which we would love to atend ,btw guys!! Chad posted on social media "Just got home about an hour ago want to say a massive thank you for making Rhyller Thriller 2: Revenge Of The Thriller an amazing event. I really hope everyone enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the Cariad Crew didn't make the after party this time, but popped back to the screenings that were still going on and caught the short film "Fister" and "Artefacts of Fear", well it would have been rude not to see some of the screenings after we'd finished for the day!
We did however find an interesting little Italian for dinner called Rossini's and were stuffed to the gills! Don't forget to let us know the date for 2025 guys!
